Prior to 2011 the only multiyear appointment for non-tenure-track faculty was the position of distinguished lecturer, which was for a period of up to five years. At its June 23, 2011, meeting, the UT Board of Trustees approved the addition of a senior lecturer position for a period of up to three years and approved appointments of up to five years for those appointed as research assistant professor, research associate professor, research professor, clinical assistant professor, clinical associate professor, and clinical professor. The only way the new appointments could be involuntarily terminated would be through cause or if funding lapsed or a funding agency ordered it stopped. Individuals could be reappointed to new terms at the conclusion of an appointment.
