In 1992 the NCAA initiated the Woman of the Year Award to honor a senior female student-athlete who had distinguished herself throughout her college career. Recipients had to have won a varsity letter in the year the award was presented, have completed eligibility in her primary sport, and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. UT’s Catherine Byrne, swimmer, was the first recipient of the award. UT’s Lauren McCalley, diver, was honored with the award in 2005, and two-time NCAA basketball champion Nicky Anosike was honored in 2008.
