In 1935 the National Youth Administration replaced the college and university component of the Federal Employment Relief Administration by providing funds to allow students to work in order to continue their education. At UT an initial 650 students applied for the work-study program. Students working through the NYA received 30 cents an hour for 50 hours a month. Graduate students received an extra $10 per month. High school students could also participate in the program. In 1941–42, UT received $23,361.70, and the sum was cut to $14,040 for 1942–43. NYA employment at UT was available to those students with the best records and the greatest need. Workers were placed in laboratories, libraries, and various university departments.
