On October 7, 1931, the United States Geographic Board officially designated the fourth highest freestanding peak in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (6,417 feet above sea level) as Mount Chapman. It was named in honor of UT alumnus David Carpenter Chapman, member of the class of 1897. Chapman Prong and Chapman Lead are also named for David Chapman. Mount Chapman had previously been named Mount Alexander.
