Building on the popularity of the Official Preppy Handbook (1980, Workman Publishing) the Kappa Alpha Fraternity held a Miss Preppy UT contest in February 1983, held at The Place on Cumberland Avenue. Of the 15 sororities invited to participate, 11 sent entries. Part of the contest involved responses by the contestants to questions from the Preppy Handbook. Miss Phi Mu, Joy Linderman, was named Miss Preppy UT, with Alpha Delta Pi’s Mollie Pitts coming in second and Tricia Pritchard of Alpha Chi Omega taking third place. The winner received a case of Miller Lite beer and gift certificates. Proceeds from the event, some $1,200, were donated to the KA’s philanthropy, muscular dystrophy.
