Matthew Glenn Smith

Rhodes Scholar Matthew Glenn Smith received the BA from UT in 1909, having been editor of the school newspaper, a basketball player, a fencer, and a lieutenant in the military cadet corps. He taught English at Knoxville High School for two years, being named a Rhodes Scholar in 1911. At Oxford he was a member of Hertford College, from which he graduated in 1914 with a degree of bachelor of arts in jurisprudence. He moved to Fort Worth, Texas, and entered the practice of law. From 1921 until 1947, he combined his practice of law with the part-time position of referee in the Federal Bankruptcy Court, giving up his law practice in 1947 to take the position full time. During his career, he handled more than two thousand cases involving sums greater than $1 million and authored three articles on the subject of bankruptcy.
