In 1980 a 10,000-square-foot temporary facility costing $360,000 was developed by the UT Physical Plant Department and Page and Associates at the western intersection of Volunteer Boulevard and Andy Holt Avenue. It was designed to provide storage space for little-used library holdings and provide space for the campus mail service (located on the P1 floor of Andy Holt Tower at the time) and the Alumni Mail Room.
Between spring and summer quarters, approximately 200,000 books and out-of-date periodicals were moved from three locations: shelves of the Hoskins Library (140,000), Science and Engineering Library in Dabney-Buehler (40,000) and 20,000 belonging to the Science and Engineering Library then stored in the basement of Hoskins. Thang Nguyen was the director of the project, which placed the materials on shelves in the storage facility by their size in order to maximize use of the space. Following removal of the materials to storage, books and other materials from the Science and Engineering Library were transferred to Hoskins. At the time of construction of the temporary facility, the entire library system—the Undergraduate Library, Hoskins Library, Science/Engineering Library, Law Library, and Agriculture/Veterinary Medicine Library) had a total of 2,900 seats.
The storage building was converted to other uses with the opening of the John C. Hodges Library and razed to allow construction of the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
