A Starbucks shop replaced the coffee and snack machines (but not the soft drink machines) in the 24-hour student lounge in Hodges Library on September 1, 2001, and Barbara Dewey, dean of libraries, announced that the adjacent study area would be refurbished and computer terminals added to give the feel of a cybercafe. The new Starbucks, and others worldwide, were designed by 1997 UT interior design graduate Misti Poling, a job captain at the Starbucks headquarters in Seattle. Besides the Hodges Library installation, she had designed Starbucks stores in Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, New York, and Boston. The Starbucks installation was popular with some students but not with all.
