The UT Library announced in August 2004 that the ban on food and beverages in the library, other than in Starbucks, was being modified. Snack foods, such as candy or peanuts, were permitted on the ground, first, and second floors of the library, as were bottles or cups with lids. Hot or messy foods and uncovered drinks were still restricted to the Starbucks study lounge. In October preservation librarian Mary Ellen Starmer reminded students of the need to take care with books. She spoke of the “gross” collection of library books damaged by sticky and gooey substances, as well as chew marks, burns, and even pet urine.
