The first microcomputer laboratory in the library was dedicated November 13, 1987. Located in room 209, the laboratory contained 11 Apple SE’s, five videowriters, and four printers. Use of the computer equipment and software was available to all students. The library had several software packages, including a word processing package, a creative drawing program, and a technical drawing program. Apple computer donated half of the Apple computers in a partnership arrangement with UT, and UT purchased the others at a major discount. Non-UT users were charged $2 an hour to use the equipment. The number of computers had grown to 18 by 1993, when the ground floor study space was converted into a computer lab, replacing the lab in room 209. The new lab, a joint project of the UT Computing Center and the Libraries, had 40 IBM and Macintosh computers, as well as scanners and a color printer.
