Library, John C. Hodges—Commons

The library converted the reserves and periodicals sections on the second floor of Hodges Library into the Commons in 2005, creating a high-tech study and gathering area open 24 hours a day. In 2006 the Office of Information Technology joined with the library in establishing a presence in the Commons.

A major renovation and expansion of services was undertaken in summer 2007, reaching completion in September 2007. That renovation/service expansion involved 137 workstations, 50 laptops that could be checked out by students, a videophone for hearing-impaired students, a new screen reader for visually impaired students, new furniture, new configurations, and more efficient services. An open house celebrating the improvements was held on January 22, 2008.

An additional $3 million renovation was begun in summer 2012 and completed in fall 2013, with a grand opening celebration on November 7. The entire second floor was renovated to streamline Commons functions. A dozen new group study rooms were added, and the Studio was expanded. Many of the services offered, such as OIT and Research Assistance, were relocated to more central locations, as were areas for the Student Success Center, the Math Tutorial Center, the Writing Center, and the Stat 201 Lab. Electrical outlets were added in the floors to provide better access for user-owned computers, and new furnishings were provided.
