In January 1968 UT joined a group of 48 other institutions of higher learning in the United States (of more than 2,200) whose libraries had one million or more volumes. Designated as the one-millionth book was the initial volume of The Papers of Andrew Johnson, a massive research and editing project of two UT history professors, Dr. LeRoy Graf and Dr. Ralph Haskins. Specially bound copies of the book were placed in all UT libraries, and UT officials presented one to US President Lyndon B. Johnson at his White House office.
