Laurel Apartments

In 1948 UT purchased Laurel Heights Apartments. In 1966 the university sold the land and building to Mathias and Gerson Bush as part of a memorandum of an agreement that the pair would construct a new, larger apartment building for married students that UT would lease back and that would become the property of UT at the end of the lease arrangement. Construction began in 1967.

When completed, the 312,430-square-foot, 14-story building housed 320 married-student families. The complex featured air conditioning, three high-speed elevators, a large recreation area in the basement, a full-size swimming pool, and a 360-car garage for residents. Architects for the project were Good & Goodstein, and the contractor was W. F. Holt and Sons of Nashville. The facility was renovated and reopened in 2008 with 316 apartments for women, first used by members of sororities at UT Knoxville, replacing sorority housing at Massey Hall and Greve Hall.
