Landscape Architecture Program

The Landscape Architecture Program, which welcomed its first class in 2008, offers three degrees: the master of landscape architecture professional degree, the master of arts in landscape architecture, and the master of science in landscape architecture. The program is jointly offered by the College of Architecture and Design and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

In 1950 the Department of Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design first proposed that UT institute a landscape architecture program. In fall 2000 the national president of the American Society of Landscape Architecture was on campus to push formation of a UT program that would replace the arrangement whereby Tennessee residents could attend other colleges through the Academic Common Market to receive a degree. Her visit was followed by a meeting of faculty and students with administrators from architecture, the College of Agriculture, and academic affairs, and a committee was formed to draft another proposal for the program to present to the board of trustees.
