A two-day symposium in fall 1973 celebrated the first issue of the Journal of Religious Ethics, established at UT Knoxville and first edited by Professor Charles Reynolds. The keynote address of the symposium was delivered by Professor James Luther Adams of the University of Chicago. Adams indicated that the journal was first conceived a decade before, while Reynolds was attending Harvard Divinity School. Initial subscriptions for the then biannual publication were four hundred to five hundred. The UT Press having declined to publish the journal, it was first published by the Council on the Study of Religion. While UT Knoxville continues to be one of the sponsors of the quarterly journal, it is edited at Florida State University.
