The annual Journal and Tribune Cross-Country run began on Thanksgiving Day 1920. It was originally a three-mile race from Cherokee Country Club to Wait Field (where Walters Life Sciences now is). The prizes, provided by Mr. Frederick T. Bonham, business manager of the Journal and Tribune, were a gold medal for first place, a silver medal for second place, and bronze medals for the next nine finishers.
