Dr. John Fred Holly Jr., who earned a master’s degree from UT in 1938, joined the university’s faculty in 1947. From 1949 to 1951, he served as head of the Department of Labor Relations and from 1951 to 1968 as head of the Department of Economics. He retired from the university in 1978. He was a specialist in labor arbitration, a member of the American Arbitration Association, and became an active arbitrator in 1947. Sixty-eight of his arbitration awards were published in Labor Arbitration Reports. Among his monographs are Protective Labor Legislation and Its Administration in Tennessee (1955) and Economics: Principles, Problems, and Perspectives (2nd. ed., 1966). He was vice president of the Tennessee Council on Economic Education from 1965 to 1978. His contributions to the intellectual life of the university have been recognized by the placement of a plaque in his honor on a faculty study.
