The Institute for Rare Isotope Measurements continues the work of the Noble Gas Lab, formerly of Atom Sciences Inc. An interdisciplinary institute, IRIM uses analytical techniques that have their roots in physics and chemistry to solve problems in the geosciences and related fields. Rare noble gases contribute to a better understanding of the environment, including dating of polar ice and ancient ground water, deep ocean circulation, and modern water-flow patterns. Seed funds for the institute came from the university, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Substantial external funding for the institute has been provided by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
