The UT Non-Fraternity Organization was established in 1932. All students not affiliated with a social fraternity or sorority were automatically members. In 1943 the name of the organization was changed to Independent Student Organization. In 1952 the name was changed to Independent Students’ Association, affiliating the organization with the National Independent Students’ Association.
Members of the Independent Students’ Council were elected annually by ISA members. Students who paid the club dues were considered active members and were entitled to vote and hold office in the association. Among the activities sponsored by the ISA was a campus-wide test file and photocopying service, a spring formal, freshman dance, crowning of a freshman queen, homecoming displays, and participation in intramurals. In 1948 the group affiliated with the National Independent Students Association. It published a biweekly newspaper, the Voice of Independents. The ISA was active on campus through the late 1960s.
