In spring 1984 two undergraduate Clement Hall resident assistants sent pamphlets across campus through campus mail soliciting students to send $18 with their application to purchase a “lifetime membership” in the honorary society Lambda Kappa Mu. The pamphlet sent to students said, “Upon graduation and the search for a career, members [of Lambda Kappa Mu] frequently use this prestigious association as a reference.” The organization did not exist. John Troyer, junior in business administration, and Tony Ficalora, senior in liberal arts, said they had intended to start the society if interest was shown. The two were fired from their position as resident assistants. Because they had not cashed any of the checks, no criminal action was taken.
