A Homecoming parade was first held in 1925, wending through downtown Knoxville. Homecoming parades were elaborate ones, involving large, elaborate floats. The parades moved from downtown to the Strip. The tradition disappeared for a few years as student interest in production of expensive floats waned. In 1977 a smaller parade was revived, and in 1980 the parade moved entirely to the campus. In 2014 the parade changed its route from Volunteer Boulevard to Andy Holt Avenue to involve more students and changed its time from late afternoon to 6:30 p.m. to make attending more practical for alumni working in the area. In 2014 also, a post parade bonfire was held at Figi Island at 8:00 p.m., and for the first time, fireworks capped off the festivities.
