In 1930 the Alumni Association offered a prize of $10 for the best decorated exterior of a fraternity house during homecoming weekend. The Sigma Phi Epsilon House on West Cumberland was declared the winner. It was entwined in UT and UNC colors. On the roof of the porch was a life-size cardboard replica of an old grad shaking hands with a young man, and the entire setting was lit by a lighted fraternity emblem.
In 1931 the Physical Education Department offered a 14-inch loving cup to be awarded annually to the fraternity decorating the outside front of its house and lawn in a “manner judged to be most fitting to the spirit of Home Coming [sic].” The winning fraternity’s name was engraved on the cup, and the fraternity held possession of it for the year.
