First held in 1934 and often called University Day, High School Day was a gala day to acquaint high school students with the university. The day combined a number of activities for high school students previously held separately: an invitational track meet; an invitational pitching tournament for both boys and girls; a tennis tournament; a swimming meet; a golf tournament; a Literary League meet (for debating, original oratory, extemporaneous speaking, declamation, humorous and dramatic reading); and a stock-judging contest. In addition to contests and tournaments, departments of the university gave exhibitions of their work, a dance was held, and students were taken on short tours of the campus and the city. In 1961 the alumni association reinitiated the program as “high school visitations,” which brought about one thousand superior high school juniors and seniors to the campus annually, of whom approximately 40 percent later enrolled at the university.
