The L. R. Hesler award is given annually to a faculty member who holds at least the rank of associate professor, has demonstrated excellence in teaching and research, and has made significant contributions to community and institutional service. Started in 1982 by formation of an endowment by former Scarabbean Society members, the award is named for former Dean of Liberal Arts L. R. Hesler, who was advisor to the Scarabbean Society for many years. More than seven hundred alumni of the society were solicited to initiate the endowment.
The award is derived from income from the endowment. One-fourth of the award is in the form of a check to the recipient; one-fourth is designated for purchase of books in the library in the recipient’s field; and one-half of the award is applied to a project chosen by the recipient and confirmed by the selection committee. The Office of Alumni Affairs coordinates the award, and the selection committee consists of three alumni and one student. The first recipient of the award was Dr. Bain Stewart of the English Department.
