Harriet C. Greve

1885–1969

Harriet Cone Greve received the BA degree from UT in 1906 and then the master’s and doctorate from Columbia University. Following graduation from UT, she taught high school in Chattanooga and then was on the staff of Southwestern College for Women in Columbia, South Carolina. While at Columbia she was in charge of Furnald Hall for graduate women for three years. She was named UT’s dean of women in 1921, a position she held until her retirement in 1951 at age 65.

She was the first person to be employed full time as dean of women. She organized the counseling and hostess systems in the women’s residence halls and was active with the Girl Scout and YWCA organizations. In 1963 a residence hall was named for her. She died in 1969 and left UT a bequest of $10,000 which the board of trustees allocated to establish the Harriet C. Greve Memorial Scholarship Fund, from the earnings of which a stipend was to go to a coed at the Knoxville campus. She was succeeded as dean by former assistant dean Gladys Beach.
