All automobiles that park on campus are required to display a hangtag giving the parking lot assignment (motorcycles and convertibles are issued a window sticker). Hangtags were first issued in summer 1986 for the 1986–87 academic year. They replaced a bumper sticker system, which had become a problem because of the advent of polymer and rubber bumpers to which the stickers did not adhere well and because the system did not allow for transferring of the parking permit between cars. (Prior to issuance of the hangtag, Parking Services required return of the scraped-off sticker to issue a new sticker when an individual purchased a new car.) Student commuter, noncommuter, and evening school hangtags were allowed for purchase online in August 2001. Permits purchased online were then available for pickup in the university center.
