When Vice Chancellor Howard Aldmon announced in August 1973 that women’s intercollegiate athletics would no longer function through the Club Sports model, seven sports were moved from club to institutional status, coordinated through the Women’s Physical Education Department. Gymnastics was one of the seven and had been added as a Club Sport in 1972. Its coach was instructor in women’s physical education Donna Donnelly. When the Women’s Athletics Department was established in 1976, gymnastics was one of the seven sports in the department. It fielded a team in 1976–77, with meets including Morehead State and Appalachian State. Following the 1976–77 season, gymnastics was discontinued. The lack of high school gymnastics programs and the resulting small number of UT students with an interest in gymnastics were given as the reasons for discontinuance.
