In 1929 a six-man gymnastics team made its first appearance at the Relay Carnival. In spring 1930 it first performed between the halves of the Harriman High-Rockwood High basketball game and performed in Johnson City, Rutledge, and elsewhere in addition to exhibitions on campus in Jefferson Hall. The final performance of the year was during the halves at the finals of the state high school basketball tournament. The team was photographed by the News-Sentinel, and the pictures were later shown at the Tennessee Theatre as part of the news segment preceding the movie. The team members were W. E. McKenzie, K. R. Peery, Porter Taylor, James Hamlett, E.V. Shealy, and S. Hood.
