Workers at Tyson House contend that the basement of the house (part of which is the original foundation of this residence much expanded by the Tysons) is haunted, and workers in the Alumni Affairs Office report hearing sounds of walking in corridors when no one is there, as well as low moans. The unidentified ghost is also credited with turning lights on and off.
Donna Bletner, then executive director of alumni affairs, reported in the Daily Beacon (October 27, 2004) that she was working in the house on a Sunday afternoon when it began to grow dark outside. She heard footsteps in the hallway upstairs and called out—because the records people often came in on weekends—but got no response. A little later she thought she heard the footsteps again, and again called out, but got no response. She went into the hallway and heard a noise upstairs—not creaking, but a scream or moan coming from a woman. She backed up against the staircase to look and, as she approached the top, saw that the light was on in the records office, although it had been off before. She left quickly.
