Annually, at the Chancellor’s Honors Banquet, the Commission For Blacks presents the Gene Mitchell Gray Pioneer Award to a student recognized for proactive contributions to promoting cultural diversity. In 1998 the inaugural award was presented posthumously to Gray (who died in 1989) and was received on his behalf by members of his family.
