GEAR UP Gradkids

From 2000–2007 the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs program of UT’s College of Education, Health, and Human Services operated in schools in Scott and Cocke Counties, working with approximately six hundred students beginning in the seventh grade and lasting through their high school graduation. Activities included tutoring, educational field trips, teacher enrichment workshops, and a summer academy. During the six-year period of its operation, the program received nearly $5.6 million, approximately one-half coming from the US Department of Education. College enrollment rates in Scott and Cocke counties rose nearly 15 percent (and 45 percent in one school) while the program operated.
