All incoming freshmen were automatically enrolled in the mandatory First Year Studies 100 for the first time in summer 2011. The course incorporated the Life of the Mind program, which had not enjoyed major participation. The class, organized by the Student Success Center, included activities such as Classlane—interactive PowerPoints that presented student success strategies, reading and writing a short paper about the reading as part of a lesson on plagiarism, attending small group discussions about the Life of the Mind book, and attending the author’s presentation. Most of the work of the course was done online through the Blackboard website. Students were encouraged to attend Welcome Week events and to become involved in activities on campus. Although participation in the course was mandatory, no credit was awarded for taking it.
