First Postseason Football Game

In 1931 the Vols were passed over for a Rose Bowl invitation following the invitation committee’s attendance at the Tennessee vs. Kentucky game that ended in a tie. The Vols did accept a postseason invitation to play New York University in Yankee Stadium on December 5. The game was arranged by the Knoxville Community Chest Association, working with the UT Athletic Council and New York Mayor Jimmy Walker’s New York Unemployment Relief Committee as a charity game. The City of Knoxville received $18,583 for charity from the game, and the City of New York received $43,359. In 1938 the Vols were invited to their first postseason bowl. After being passed over for the Rose and Sugar Bowls, the undefeated Vols accepted an invitation to play in Miami in the new Orange Bowl against Oklahoma on January 2, 1939. Guaranteed $25,000 for the appearance, UT defeated Oklahoma 17-0.
