In fall 1961 UT first charged students to register their cars to park in campus parking lots. The fee was $5 for a full year (September 1–August 31). Fees for portions of the year (January 1–August 31: $4; March 1 to August 31: $3; and June 1–August 31: $2) were also assessed. Also in fall 1961, UT designated four types of parking areas: faculty and staff, commuter student, noncommuter student, and visitor.
