The tradition of shooting fireworks to punctuate Vols scores in Neyland Stadium began with a 1988 suggestion from Langston Hill, president of Pyro Shows of LaFollette, that fireworks, which would be both seen and heard inside the stadium, be shot from the south bank of the river across from the stadium. With the construction of the condominium building and associated marina on the south bank, fire codes no longer permitted setting off fireworks from the traditional location. In 2007 Pyro Shows experimented with shooting the fireworks from a barge in the river and experimented with possible land sites on St. Patrick’s Day. The decision was to modify the mix of the explosives and shoot them off from within the stadium.
