The Farmers’ Club, an agricultural student organization, was formed in 1890. Its recorded purpose was the “promulgation and preservation of pastoral patriotism.” It required candidates for membership to have “handl’d a hoe—rock’d a cradle—pull’d a bell cord—and raised cane!” Its motto was Hoe Out Your Row; its flower, Corn Flower; its color, grass green; and its yell, “Go to bed sun-down— / Rise ’fore day. / Watermelon, Pumpkin! / Gee! Haw! Yea-a-a!”
