Construction of a Kefauver Wing of the James D. Hoskins Library was one goal of the Estes Kefauver Memorial Foundation, organized to perpetuate his memory and ideals. Franklin Haney of Cleveland chaired a nonpartisan, statewide fundraising dinner for the foundation. Jim E. Hall served as coordinator for the two-day “coins for Keef” campaign, through which all students had an opportunity to donate and to sign a scroll, which was placed in the Kefauver library addition. The foundation set a goal of $775,000 for the library addition, scholarships, and awards.
At the library dedication ceremony in June 1966, the announcement was made that contributions had totaled $925,291 and included the state appropriation of $125,000 toward the $140,000 cost of the library. UT was presented an endowment scholarship check for $257,575.39. (UT SGA assisted in raising funds for the scholarships.) An additional $55,000 had been given directly to the scholarship endowment, and the remaining funds pledged to the foundation were subsequently turned over to UT. Nine high school graduates were selected for UT Kefauver scholarships for 1966–67.
The foundation also assisted other schools in establishing scholarships and appropriate memorials to Kefauver.
