Estabrook Letter

In February 2011 philatelist Dr. Tom Broadhead, professor of geological sciences and director of Undergraduate Advancement, was at a stamp show in South Carolina when a dealer pulled out a letter written December 25, 1835, by Dr. Joseph Estabrook to his cousin, John Wood, in New Hampshire. In the letter Estabrook wrote that the institution’s requirements were the same as those of Amherst and Yale, spoke of improvements at the institution, and noted that “the office of President here is no sinecure. If I have more salary than the professors—I have all the responsibility—everything to oversee and attend to.” Broadhead purchased the letter for $600 and donated it to the University Archives.
