Dr. Swanson joined the university’s Department of Dairying (later, Department of Animal Science) in 1947 where he served until 1983. He was recognized for his research in four major areas of dairy production: preservation of bull semen, dairy cattle nutrition, lactation physiology, and iodine metabolism and thyroid physiology. His research is published in 115 articles in refereed journals, book chapters, and bulletins. He was twice the recipient of the local chapter’s Gamma Sigma Delta Distinguished Research Award (1969, 1977). He also received the Calcium Carbonate Company Trace Mineral Research Award (1977) and the Borden Award (1977) and was appointed Chancellor’s Research Scholar in 1978. His intellectual contributions to the life of the university have been recognized by placement of a plaque in his honor on a faculty study.
