The Equestrian Club was formed in spring 1968. The club provided lessons and pleasure riding for its members and participated in a physical education course, which was offered for credit. Founded in 1975 the University of Tennessee Equestrian Team competes in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (Zone 5, Region 1) in hunt seat equitation and western horsemanship.
In 1992, after its location on Northshore Drive lost about 120 acres to the Pellissippi Parkway construction, the club moved to the John Niceley farm off Rutledge Pike. At the time of the move, the club owned 17 horses, available for members to ride, and several other privately owned horses that could also be ridden by the general membership. It subsequently moved to operate in two locations: Select Sport Horses at Winfield Oaks Farm in Greenback (hunt seat) and Hidden Hollow Farm in Friendsville (western). In 2010 they moved to Hartbrook Farm in New Market, where there are more than one thousand miles of trails on the 150-acre farm. Members pay dues and lesson fees each semester.
