Elementary School

In 1953 the UT College of Education (now the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) began operating a monthlong morning, summer elementary school in a Knoxville elementary school building to offer a course in student teaching for experienced teachers who were meeting requirements for their college degrees. The course was open to teachers who were issued teaching certificates following three years of college and who wanted a degree. Enrollment was limited, and the school was not operated to provide makeup work for students. The charge to students to attend the summer school session was $5. Operation of the school continued for more than 12 years.
