This 82,748-square-foot building designed by Barber and McMurry was completed in 1963 at a cost of $1.3 million. It was built as a women’s dormitory to house 320 students and was originally designated West Hall B or West Hall, Phase III. It was named in October 1967 for Dr. Ralph E. Dunford, professor of psychology, who became dean of men in 1944 and later served as dean of students until his retirement in 1967. Naming a dormitory for Dean Dunford was particularly appropriate since he championed the cause of providing housing for veterans returning from World War II. The building was taken out of service as a dormitory in summer 1984 when the first three floors were used for the temporary relocation of materials from the undergraduate library and the remainder of the building was used for offices.
