In January 1990 Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Philip Scheurer announced at a press conference that more than two hundred students were being investigated for fraud for acquiring and using a university password to gain access to the Drop/Add system in order to add classes that were closed or to drop courses after the drop deadline. He indicated that the misuse of the password had apparently begun some four terms before its discovery. In March 1990 the Office of Student Conduct announced it had suspended 19 students, placed 111 students on probation, and reprimanded 7 additional students for taking part in the use of the password.
