Professor Noel joined the faculty of the College of Law in 1945, was named a Distinguished Service Professor in 1966, and retired in 1974. He practiced in New York City and Boston and taught at three other universities before joining the UT Law faculty. His special field of interest was product liability, and he coauthored a standard text in that field in 1975. He was author of over 20 articles in the most distinguished law journals. One, “Manufacturers’ Negligence of Design or Directions for Use,” became a classic in its field, frequently cited by judges and repeatedly requested by design engineers, attorneys, and judges in connection with pending cases. Another article on the same subject helped to produce a new rule concerning manufacturers’ liability, adopted by the American Law Institute in 1964. A member of the Order of the Coif, Phi Beta Kappa, and the American Law Institute, he served as adviser to the Tennessee Law Review for 22 years. His intellectual contributions to the life of the university have been recognized by placement of a plaque in his honor on a faculty study.
