In November 1969 UT began a program of providing special assistance to handicapped students. Originally, the function was housed in the Admissions Office, where assistance was provided for schedule planning, class enrollment, purchase of books and materials, notification of faculty of handicapped students’ needs, and parking. The Treasurer’s Office allowed late payment of fees without penalty so that disabled students would not have to wait in long registration lines to pay. The current Office of Disability Services provides a wide range of services to students with documented disabilities by determining their eligibility for services, and then working with students to determine reasonable accommodations and services, which provide equal access to the university.
