David Granger (BA 1978) became editor of Esquire magazine in 1997. The son of UT School of Social Work Dean Ben Granger, he majored in history and English at UT and earned the master’s in English at the University of Virginia. After completing the Radcliff College publishing procedures course, he moved to New York and entered the publishing business, first for Welsh Publishing (including a stint as Muppet magazine’s book columnist Rowlf the Dog). With John Walsh he then wrote a book on the history of the Heisman Trophy, then worked at a number of magazines (Family Weekly; Parade; National Sports Journal; Sports, Inc.; Adweek; Media Week) before landing at Gentleman’s Quarterly and then at Esquire.
