In the spring of 1902 the Knoxville chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution decided that it would be nice to bring a magnolia tree from Mount Vernon and plant it on the Hill, since UT had been established when George Washington was president. An impressive ceremony was held, but the tree turned out to be a small slip. That night, students dug up the Mount Vernon magnolia and replaced it with a full-size magnolia. The Mount Vernon magnolia was found cast aside in a ditch and was replanted adjacent to the full-size tree.
