UT purchased the commercial buildings at the north corner of Cumberland Avenue and Seventeenth Street in 2013. Funded by ARAMARK, UT’s dining services contractor, seventeen thousand square feet were renovated to provide for restaurants and a branch of the VolShop. Two restaurants, Panda Express and Raising Cane’s, opened September 19, 2014, shortly after the opening of the VolShop branch. The building also contained a stage suitable for live radio shows, Department of Theatre events, and other public activities. Cost of the renovation project was $2 million.
