He was named the league’s Most Valuable Player in 1982 while he was with the Toronto Argonauts. He also won the Schenley Award in 1982, and he played in three Grey Cup contests, winning in 1976 and 1983. He retired as a player in 1987 and joined the staff of the UT Athletics Department as assistant/associate athletics director for Player Relations and Lettermen.

In 1999 he was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and was elected to the UT Baseball Hall of Fame only a few months later. He has been inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, and his jersey was retired by the Argonauts. He was named to UT’s 100th anniversary team and is a member of UT’s African American Hall of Fame.
