Computer Security Breach, 2006

In July UT informed 36,000 present and former employees that a database of personal information affecting 36,000 people had been hacked. Names, addresses, and social security numbers were in the database. The problem was discovered in mid-May in a computer on the agriculture campus. An unauthorized entity had been using the computer from August 2005 to May 2006 to store and transmit movies, and the database was on the compromised computer. Software found on the computer led to the discovery, which UT reported to the FBI. UT technology officials indicated that it did not appear that the database information had been downloaded or used.
